Dear Friends & Supporters:
It’s been nearly a year since I was first elected to office, and what a year it has been. I’ve faced some of the greatest challenges and opportunities of my life, and I will be forever grateful for this experience.
My first session taught me a few valuable lessons. The first and most important lesson is that YOUR VOICE is not heard often enough in the halls of our state Capitol. Too many decisions coming from our state government are done to appease special interest groups and well-heeled lobbyists.
I vowed to you when I first ran — and I vow to you again — that working families will have a strong voice as long as I am your state representative. I know that many decisions and many actions that I took standing up for the little guy have put a target on my back and earned the anger of some very powerful special interests and that these interests will seek to have me removed.
So be it.
I didn’t run for this office because I just wanted to remain in office. I ran to make a difference and to stand up for our school children, our families, our environment and for the people who otherwise have no voice.
I opposed the budget because it enacted cruel cuts in services while adding millions in ridiculous fees and taxes. I voted against taking money out of our community and neighborhood schools in order to fund private schools. I rallied against nonsense legislation that tried to hinder your ability to vote, while it did nothing to help you find a job, put food on the table and provide for your family.
Throughout these hard-fought battles, I believe I made a difference.
Nevertheless, some things are and always will be out of my, and our, control. The dust had barely settled on the November 2008 election and I hadn’t even cast my first floor vote, before former state representative and perennial candidate Gayle Harrell had arrived in the Capitol seeking special interest support for a run against me.
I was not terribly surprised nor do I take her candidacy lightly. I am, after all, a newcomer to Tallahassee and a relative novice to Florida politics.
And I still believe that’s a good thing.
As we move forward to 2010, I will continue to be a strong and active voice for the values we share. I hope that in doing so, if I haven’t already, I will earn your trust and your support.
Sincerely,
